Speaking at a virtual seminar organised by the South Asia Centre of London School of Economics on Wednesday, marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, the prominent economist said Bangabandhu’s commitment to not using religion as a political instrument applies not just to Bangladesh, but is also ‘very important’ in a global context.
“No-one can rob us of his [Bangabandhu] clear-headed vision,” Sen said.

March 1971 was indeed an exceptional month when the history of emerging Bangladesh, as well as the entire Indian sub-continent, experienced unprecedented twists. For Bengalis, this was the most significant month when several historical milestones were laid down.
The overwhelming victory of Awami League led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the General Election in 1970 was completely unexpected to the civil-military ruling clique and most other political parties of Pakistan. They had thought at least a few seats would go to other political parties, depriving Awami League of a single majority. But destiny had other things in store.

As part of celebrating the Birth Centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the second lecture of “Bangabandhu Lecture Series” will be held on Wednesdday in virtual platform.
Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen will be the keynote speaker on the Bangabandhu Birth Centenary Talk titled “Bangabandhu and Visions of Bangladesh”, while Professor Rehman Sobhan will be a discussant.
This event is being jointly collaborated by London School of Economics (LSE) and Bangladesh High Commission in London.

Benegal said the story of Zubeidaa Begum caught his attention when he read Khalid Mohamed s article in a newspaper and he thought it was a beautiful love story.
